Building the Alki Vision: Aligning School Space to District Equity Initiatives
Description:
Seattle Public Schools aspires to ensure equity in our educational system by unapologetically addressing the needs of students furthest from educational justice. Charged to see Akli Elementary as a vehicle for actualizing the district's commitment to equity and inclusion, the team recognized the need to transform practices to create a building that actively communicates values and messages of belonging and inclusion. Guided by Amara H. Pérez’s critical race spatial lens, we developed an engagement approach amplifying community voice to uncover the active role space plays reproducing social-educational-environmental inequities that are often invisible, ignored, or under-examined in a design process.
